Shall then this verse to future age pretend
Thou wert my guide, philosopher and friend!
Alexander Pope
In our second deal on guiding partner’s defense, West leads the heart king against four spades, East encouraging with the 10. West can see two heart tricks for the defense. Even if South has both minor aces, West can expect to take a trick in each minor in time. However, there is a danger that declarer can establish one of those suits to take care of his losers in the other. Looking at the respective minors, West sees that dummy’s clubs will set up for three tricks if South has the ace, whereas the same cannot be said for diamonds. The defense should therefore attack diamonds, and that is best done by East. How can West get East to play diamonds rather than clubs?West should continue with the heart nine, forcing East to win the trick and giving a suit-preference signal for the higher side suit. East duly returns a diamond at trick three, after which declarer cannot succeed. If declarer plays low, West wins with the diamond king and gets out safely with a pointed suit. South’s best bet might be to win the diamond ace, draw two trumps and play another diamond. This would endplay West if he started with no more than two spades (likely in view of the double), but it does not work here. West can get in with the diamond king and exit with his third trump, and declarer has no communication for a squeeze. If West takes two hearts and shifts to a trump, declarer can succeed by playing on clubs.
