Mixed BAM and Wernher Titles Decided as Spingold Reaches Quarterfinals

Debbie Rosenberg, Ben Kristensen, Christal Henner, Uday Ivatury, Fred Gitelman and Sheri Winestock won the Freeman Mixed Board-a-Match Teams with 40.22 wins, securing the title before the final round was played. Qualifying second with a carryover of 4.72, they scored 17 wins in the first final session and 18.5 in the second. It was the first NABC title for Kristensen and Ivatury. Rosenberg won the event for the second time after her 2002 success, while newly inducted Hall of Famer Fred Gitelman added another national title. Jared Lilienstein, Janice Seamon-Molson, Rozanne Pollack and Bill Pollack finished second with 35.25 wins. Seamon-Molson and the Pollacks had earlier won the Grand National Teams Championship Flight. Sheila Gabay, Daniel Boye, Alan Watson and Patricia Dovell placed third with 34.50 wins. 

David Berkowitz and Jeff Meckstroth won the Wernher Open Pairs with 2367.72 matchpoints, finishing 161.27 ahead of Jiang Gu and Hailong Ao. Brent Xiao and Cornelius Duffie took third place. Berkowitz and Meckstroth followed two 61% qualifying sessions with two 65% finals. The victory brings their combined total to 99 NABC+ championships. 

The Round of 16 of the Spingold Knockout Teams featured two seeded upsets. No. 14 Cayne eliminated No. 3 Zimmermann 129-00 after trailing by 38 IMPs with one quarter to play and winning the final 15 boards 70-3. No. 13 Goodman defeated No. 4 Nickell 151-104. The closest match saw Wolfson overturn a 10-IMP deficit after three quarters to beat Vedanta Capital by 11 IMPs. Quarterfinal play begins Friday.

The quarterfinal lineup is: Wolfson vs. Lubå, Fleisher vs. Amoils, Cayne vs. Street, and Goodman vs. Rosenthal.
