The problem with opening 1N is that it has a mild preempting impact and it severely deceives your dear partner: you are so close to the game with so many tricks, so much more than the max 5 1/2 tricks you would tell the partner. Open 2C and rebid 2N on 2D.

Now of course, if your system contains 3N preempts -as it should-, a 3N preempt is to be considered as an option. True, you then miss a 7th Club card, but in most cases nobody will point it out… The up side is that your hand belongs really more to the destructive rather then constructive category, and your 2C opening would be severely misleading your partner in terms of defensive tricks. As a result, partner could decide to double for penalty any overcall by the opponents… The same would be true for a 1N opening, that should really not be favored, in my opinion.

It might be simple, but 1C leaves the bidding room to arrive at the right contract and, crucially, allows for a 1D bid by partner. If opponents pass and partner bids 1D my rebid is 3NT otherwise 3C
