– 1N: out of the question: this call would guarantee 3 tricks and a willingness to play there. No way: I will not make more than 1 trick and probably give the opposition 4 tricks in and at least 3 tricks elsewhere. But most important, I would fool my partner who perhaps has a broken 1-suiter or just the 4 honor tricks he promised, or 6 or 7 playing tricks.
– Double: they are just too likely to succeed: I just know of 45 tricks our way. Forget it.
– 2: never mislead a partner about your holding in a major suit.
– 2: the orthodox decision. At least 1 trick and perhaps only 3 cards in the minor for lack of anything better.
– 2: my favorite. True you perhaps have 1 trick in stock, but really nothing else unless you can somehow carve a ruff if partner has got a 1-suiter in or . The next suit -excluding NT- as a response to the take-out double shows strictly less than a trick, and either partner or East is likely to be void in . In case partner has a 1-suiter, my response will make him cautious as he won’t initially expect a single and/or a trick in my hand.
