Author's question

This quiz is the third in a series dedicated to the 2025 World Team Championships, some in French, some in English.  This series was made possible thanks to the publication by Mark Horton and David Bird of a (free) booklet that covers the event.  We urge you to get it through BBO which provides the link.  We will question a number of competitors’ auctions that raise questions.  The booklet page covered in the quiz will be mentioned to enable you to explore the question further.

Today: pages 24 & 25.  Board 53.

I think the author’s explanation is resulting. There are lots of ways to get too high here. You will be in either 3NT or 4M opposite almost any 12-13 count. Is that what you want?

You should be reasonably safe in any contract. Say partner brings KQx xx Jxxxx xxx, 2 will be a good spot against 2. Or KQx xx Kxxxx xxx, 2 is unlikely to fail. or KQx xx Kxxxx Kxx, 3 will be a fair attempt. Or KQxx x Kxxxx Kxx, 4 will be the place to be. in front of a capable partner who will properly evaluate his hand and not just count points, opening with your hand gives you the best odds.
