Spingold Down to the Last 16
The 2026 Spingold Knockout Teams has reached the Round of 16 after four days of play, leaving just sixteen teams with a chance to lift one of bridge’s most coveted trophies.
The championship began with 77 teams, with the top 25 seeds receiving first-round byes before the full knockout bracket got underway. Since then, the field has already produced several surprises. Among the notable casualties are Madan Lall, Rob Helle, Davinci, Bill Bailey, Zimmermann, Feinstein NPC and Agustin Madala, all eliminated before the quarterfinal stage.
One of the biggest stories has been the run of Jian-Jian Wang’s team. Seeded only 50th, Wang first upset No. 15 seed Madan Lall before defeating another higher-ranked opponent to reach the Round of 32. Their remarkable run finally came to an end in one of the closest matches of the tournament, a heartbreaking 146–145 loss to the Rombaut team.
Although several outsiders have impressed, the remaining field is still packed with world-class talent. Teams led by Nick Nickell, Fleisher, Street, Rosenthal, Goodman, Vedanta Capital, Overdeck, Rombaut, Amoils, Shourie and Patricia Cayne are all still alive, promising an exceptional finish to the championship.
The Round of 16 features several outstanding encounters. Fleisher meets Rombaut in a clash loaded with international stars, while Street faces Levinson and Patricia Cayne takes on Zimmermann. On the opposite side of the draw, Wolfson meets Vedanta Capital, Luba plays Rubenstein, Rosenthal faces Overdeck, and Goodman squares off against Nickell.
The winners of these matches will advance to Friday’s quarterfinals, followed by the semifinals on Saturday and the championship final concluding on Sunday
