It is played as a knockout competition over several days, with teams eliminated from the main event continuing in secondary competitions, most notably the Punchbowl.

The 2026 edition was notable for both the size and strength of the field. For the first time in over 30 years, the event reached its maximum capacity of 64 teams, allowing for a complete knockout structure without the need for three-team groups at any stage. The format used was a dual-elimination system, in which teams could lose once and remain in contention, but a second defeat resulted in elimination to the secondary events. A total of 21 countries were represented, making this one of the most internationally diverse fields in the history of the competition.

The main event was won by the Schnelwar team (Susan Schnelwar, Zachary Grossack, Joe Grue, Vincent Demuy and Adam Kaplan) of the USA.

Alongside the main competition, the Punchbowl provided a secondary event for teams knocked out of the principal draw. The 2026 Punchbowl was won by the Nettleton team (Matt Brown, David Gold, Diana Nettleton and Tom Paske), who emerged successfully from a competitive field in the later stages of the event.

Congratulations to the winners of both the main event and the Punchbowl.

The Spring Foursomes, organised by the English Bridge Union, is one of the leading team events in the UK bridge calendar.
